RAYA SORKINE
Born in 1936 in Paris, Raya Sorkine is of French-Russian parentage. This fusion of heritage has provided him with an inexhaustible source of inspiration since he first embarked on his art career. The limpid blues of his personnages' eyes amidst the backdrop of a symphony of lucid reds and greens, conjure a realm of veritable sublimity.
Being the personification of the itinerant Jew, Raya enriches his art with his travels in Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Yugoslavia, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden and the United States. The profound study of the Zohar, the Cabala and the Bible has simultaneously contributed to the diversity of themes. His seven marriages explain for the recurrent theme of joyous wedding scenes. Instead of dwelling upon the Holocaust, which claimed his loved ones, Raya broke free from despondency to spread dreams, love, and other affirmative values with paint and brush.
His colours are bright and lucid, and the paint, thick. A strong sense of movement is created by the flowing brushstrokes. Be it a clown. a violinist. a lady, or a newly wed couple, Raya never fails to imbue them with joy and mysticism.
Indeed, though rooted in Judaeo-Christian tradition, Raya's art knows no boundaries. Between 1960 and 1996, his paintings were celebrated by audiences from Asia, Europe and America in no less than 84 exhibitions. Though already well-established, his renown is still ever growing, and the difference he has made to both the Jewish and international art scenes is not to be belittled.
