Douglas Hofman b. 1945 Israel Born to German-American parents, Hoffmann has lived in Baltimore, Maryland all his life. Building trains was his father's hobby and this detail-oriented work taught him patience and instilled in him attention to detail. As a youth, Hoffman's parents loved to watch movies and this sparked his imagination and his sense of beauty and composition. Always being able to draw, he never took this skill very seriously. It was on a whim in 1963 that Hoffmann enrolled in The Maryland Institute College of Art. Although, abstract expressionism was popular at the time, he preferred realism, particularly the style of the old masters. Joseph Sheppard, his mentor, taught him the 'Maroger Method', a painting discipline that emulates the chemistry and qualities of oil paintings by the Dutch Masters. The ideas of his work are a combination of serendipity and planning. Nearly every image that he paints or draws is composed and initially created photographically. He is considered to be a part of the 'Maroger' school, which is really nothing more than a group of artists, originally centered around Baltimore, who have largely set out to re-discover the techniques of old masters, and more specifically the actual chemical compostions of the oil paint used in the Netherlands during the 16th and 17th centuries.
