Jean-Claude Picot (1933–2020) was a French master whose "no-smoke" training was deeply influenced by the Fauvist giants Vlaminck, Derain, and Matisse. From his first solo exhibition in 1947 at the age of fourteen, Picot dedicated his career to capturing the animation and romance of the European landscape. His style, Post-Impressionist Fauvism, utilizes a saturated palette and simplified, essential forms to evoke a sense of carefree Mediterranean life. Whether painting the boat-filled harbors of the Cote d’Azur, the bustling flower markets of Paris, or the quiet beaches of Saint-Tropez, Picot’s work is instantly recognizable for its "bright and cheerful character." Over 50 one-person shows worldwide and major representation through Park West Galleries solidified his status as a favorite among international collectors. Following his passing in 2020 due to COVID-19 complications, he remains celebrated as a painter who successfully bridged the gap between 20th-century art history and contemporary residential collecting.
