Stencil artist Kunstrasen (German, b. 1979) explores themes of authenticity, mimicry, and mass production in street-art-inspired paintings, prints, works on paper, and sculptures. Derived from the German word for astroturf—and a play on kunst (art) and rasen (speeding)—Kunstrasen’s moniker reflects his sly humor and sharp cultural commentary. Kunstrasen frequently appropriates famous artworks in his own works to comment on popular culture and consumerism. The acrylic and spray-painted Spot Remover (2018) references Damien Hirst’s ubiquitous spot paintings.
