Mike Lee’s (American, b. 1983) monochromatic paintings may appear digitally rendered or air-sprayed, but they are classic oil paintings, created solely through meticulous layers of brushwork. The delicate interplay of light and shadow, along with the accentuated geometrical forms painted with a deliberate use of muted texture, reflects his long-practiced, self-controlled movement. Lee’s layered compositions of overlapping, fragmented scenes create a cinematic flow, unfolding multiple narratives on a single canvas. Currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Lee earned his BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. He has had solo exhibitions at Half Gallery and ATM Gallery in New York, the Sifang Art Museum in Shanghai, and Amala Gallery in Tokyo. He has also participated in group exhibitions at venues including the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the Vincent Price Art Museum, among others.
