Johnson Tsang
Johnson Tsang (b. 1960, Hong Kong) is best known for his porcelain and stainless steel works that he infuses with kinetic energy, from sculptures of splashes to uncanny human faces that he contorts to convey extreme expressions. Merging the influences of realism and surrealism, Tsang consistently generates online buzz, and his series “Bowls of Fantasy” and “Splash of Wonder” respectively received awards from the Korean International Ceramic Biennale in 2011 and the Taiwan Ceramics Biennale in 2012. Entirely self-taught, Tsang is informed by his dreams and is particularly interested in depicting babies as a way to explore the perspective of one’s inner child. Though his work addresses themes such as innocence and the subconscious, it’s also rooted in somber realities. Tsang formerly worked as a police officer and has said that the darkness and violence of crimes he encountered then has left an indelible mark on his creative perspective.
