Debbie Slowey
is a University trained artist, graduated from the oldest art school in the country- the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Born in 1959 in Syracuse Debbie took to art as soon as she was able to hold a crayon. Throughout her childhood Debbie developed an appreciation for expression of her inner world. She would often sit in trees for hours with pastels or watercolors and canvas. Years of artistic engagement made it clear that Debbie's life would be centered upon her passion for art. After the Academy Debbie moved her studio to Manhattan where she attended to "Life as an Artist". Formal study completed she fed her need for continuing knowledge in museums and galleries of the city. One particular hot-spot was Bob Blackburns Printmaking Workshop PMW, where with mentoring from Bob Blackburn and Will Barnet she discovered fine art printmaking. Bob was granted a MacArthur award at the time of Debbies internship which provided exposure to great humanistic ideals at the workshop. Will Barnet helped Debbie complete her last steps on the journey to professionalism and his influence is cherished by Debbie. Leaving NYC a few years ago to escape the cold, Deb now lives in the Sunshine state Florida. Without the income potentials of NYC and avoiding slavery to styles and trends Debbie has found self sufficiency by entering the world of health care as a traveling Registered Nurse. Her mature work reflects the intimacy she shares with her hospital patients.
