HAROLD E. LARSEN
Born in Gowen, Michigan; 1934
Larsen’s most overwhelming paintings, the large-scale works, convey, in wholly abstract terms, those same titanic subjects undertaken by the great Romantics of the last century, like Turner; the Romantic, abstractionist or not, is most at home where worlds collide, where volcanoes erupt, where deluge sweeps everything from its path. Hal Larsen has no qualms peering into the abyss or imagining the supernal.
The launch pad, the point of departure for the sometimes hallucinatory works, we hasten to add, remains landscape, through only rarely do we detect a horizon line or other earthly landmark to get our bearings. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke coined the term "inscape" to describe certain works of early modern art, and this is perhaps an apt description of Hal Larsen’s work, for he reveals, through pure color, the "state of the soul", an "inscape" as real for him as anything in observable nature. It is Larsen’s goal to objectify the subjective, to make visible and tangible his apparently rampant passions, in a way that mere representation rarely can.
