MIGUEL COVARRUBIAS
Miguel Covarrubias, also known as José Miguel Covarrubias Duclaud, was a Mexican artist and intellectual known for his painting, caricature, and illustration. His work often explored caricatures, ethnology, and art history. Covarrubias was born in 1904 in Mexico City, Mexico and passed away in 1957 in the same city. He was educated at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria and was a contemporary of notable figures such as Matthew W. Stirling, Rosa Rolando, Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Eugene O'Neill, Nickolas Muray, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, W.C. Handy, and Wolfgang Paalen. Covarrubias was honored with the 1929 National Art Directors' Medal and his works have been exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
