NELSON DE LA NUEZ
Nelson De La Nuez’s (Cuban, b. 1959) practice riffs on the Pop legacy of artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, filtering their aesthetics through a distinctly contemporary lens. De La Nuez populates his cluttered canvases with cultural icons like Audrey Hepburn and Muhammad Ali and cartoon characters Mickey Mouse, Mr. Monopoly, and Richie Rich, juxtaposing these figures with ironic snippets of text like “luxury tax” or collaged newspaper clippings detailing stock market crashes. The resulting works act as commentaries on our collective fixation on wealth and status. De La Nuez has exhibited in such cities as New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Basel, Miami, and Singapore. His works are in multiple collections, including the Coral Springs Museum of Art and Delta Airlines, and he has collaborated with such brands as Hermès and Corum.
