French artist Sophie Dumas presents a unique body of work born from her time on Columbus Island in the Bahamas. Fascinated by the natural beauty of the local Seagrape tree—Dumas began collecting its fallen leaves, transforming them into intricate, textured canvases. Giving new life to these organic forms, turning them into what resembles a kind of botanical leather. Inspired by her early love of painting and the slow, meditative craft of embroidery, Dumas’s creations blend acrylics, sand, and glitter in richly decorative patterns that evoke the baroque and the intuitive. Each leaf is a singular piece—varied in shape, size, and tone—requiring multiple steps to prepare and finish. Now based in Nassau, she works full-time as an artist. Committed to community and environmental advocacy, Dumas donates part of her proceeds to women’s causes and champions the preservation of Nassau’s native coastline—where century-old trees are disappearing in the face of mass tourism development. Her work invites viewers to discover a poetic dialogue between nature, memory, and art.
