AMARANTH EHRENHALT
Working well into her 90s, Abstract Expressionist Amaranth Ehrenhalt (American, 1927–2021) created oil paintings, watercolors, sculptures, drawings, and textiles that centered on organic lines and spontaneous markmaking. Ehrenhalt received her BFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951 and took weekly courses at the Barnes Foundation. She lived in New York at the height of Ab-Ex in the 1950s before embarking on a trip to Europe, where she ended up staying for more than 30 years. In Paris, Ehrenhalt mingled with Yves Klein and Alberto Giacometti; she also enjoyed the patronage of Sonia Delaunay, who let Ehrenhalt charge art supplies to her account, and exhibited alongside fellow American expats like Sam Francis, Shirley Jaffe, and Joan Mitchell. She frequently traveled between Paris, Italy, and the United States before returning to the U.S. permanently in 2008.
