Sir Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), surgeon and etcher, was born in London. He was educated at University College School, University College (London) the Sorbonne (Paris), and member of the College of Surgeons (London). A distinguished surgeon, he followed the art of original etching and catapulted its revival.

Sir W. R. Drake helped him found the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. Haden studied prints and arranged them in chronological order. He studied Durer, Lucas van Leyden and Rembrandt. This led to his important monograph on the etched work of Rembrandt. One of Haden’s most notable was the “Breaking up of the Agamemnon.” Haden practiced the art of mezzotint engraving, and produced many remarkable books on etchings. His memberships: Institute de France, Academie des Beaux-Arts and Societe des Artistes Frangais.
