RICHARD MACDONALD

Richard MacDonald is a contemporary American artist known for his expressive figurative sculptures. He sculpts bodies in motion—dancers, athletes, and mimes—exploring the physicality and athletic limits of the human form. “I can actually feel the interior body of a dancer,” the artist remarked. “I have the ability to capture a split second. I want you to be hit with whatever the essence is of this sculpture.” Born on June 6, 1946 in Pasadena, CA, MacDonald won a scholarship to study at the Art Center College of Design where he graduated in 1971. Classically trained as painter, he worked as a commercial illustrator early in his career, before teaching himself sculpture in the 1980s. Some of the artist’s most memorable pieces have been for public installations, including The Flair (1996) which commemorated the Olympic Games in Atlanta’s International Plaza, The Grand Coda at the White Lodge of The Royal Ballet of London honoring the dancer Dame Ninette de Valois, and his commissioned work for the performance group Cirque du Soleil at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. MacDonald currently lives and works in Monterey, CA.
