OKUDA
Multicolored geometric patterns, organic shapes, and anonymous grey figures inhabit Okuda San Miguel’s (Spanish, b. 1980) striking creations, reflections on the contradictions and incoherencies of contemporary culture. San Miguel started out as a graffiti artist, painting railway sidings and abandoned factories in his home town of Santander, Spain, before moving to Madrid in 2000, where he completed a BFA at Complutense University. His wall murals can now be viewed across the globe, including in United States, Norway, Japan, Chile, Mexico, and India. The artist’s paintings and installations have appeared in numerous group shows, including the International Graffiti Biennale in Belo Horizonte, Brazil; Conde Duque Museum in Madrid; and the Altamira Museum in Cantabria, Spain, while solo exhibitions of his work have been held in Spain and Portugal. Bright, dynamic, and direct, San Miguel’s arresting visual language transforms space and raises profound questions about modernity and existence. As the artist explains, this is “pop surrealism with the essence of the street.”
