Joseph Stabilito
Joseph Stabilito has been creating dynamic canvases since his inaugural exhibition in 1982 at the Sande Webster Gallery in Philadelphia. Born in 1955, Stabilito attended the Tyler College of Art in Elkins Park, Pa. His early work followed the canon of the Abstract Illusionism movement, populated by James Havard and others. A showcase of his larger paintings in the windows of Bonwit Teller, an elegant women’s store, brought his first public recognition. That was followed by a display of his boldly colored canvases for the windows of Bloomingdales in New York, which earned him the attention of prominent interior designers, such as Juan Montoya and Joe deSantis, who commissioned his work. In 1983 he moved to New York, and joined the burgeoning East Village art scene, a red hot cultural moment. Stabilito then began changing his work, searching for a truer expression of himself. He experimented with various styles, and techniques, realizing that his love of abstraction, color, and surrealism were the dominant components of an idiosyncratic style he could call his own. To that end, Stabilito has been painting for over 40 years, and been exhibited in shows, galleries, and artfairs around the globe. His blend of florescent color, inventive structuring, and doodles are instantly unique. Joseph Stabilito currently lives in New York and Upstate NY.
