Wong Shue
Adrian Wong Shue was born in Jamaica in 1952 when the island was still a British Colony. His father sent him to Canton when he was fourteen to study drawing under the master artist Alfred Chin. During the 1960s, the artist studied painting and drawing at Kingston College High School. Vocational training during his secondary school years also included a period of study under a private tutor who taught a traditional Chinese drawing technique which combined the use of calligraphy brushes and charcoal powder.
At the Bunker Hill Art League in Los Angeles in 1981, Wong Shue observed a painting demonstration by Ting Shao Kuang, one of the founding members of the Yunnan School. For the rest of the 1980s, the artist explored the non-traditional techniques of the artists of "The Yunnan Movement" that was then newly introduced to the western world. In 1988, Wong Shue's gouaches were published in the form of numerous limited editions of serigraphs. Exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and Asia brought the artist international acclaim. The artist currently produces figurative paintings, drawings, gouaches, dry points, etchings, and sculptures.
