HEINRICH ZILLE

Heinrich Zille was a popular German illustrator and photographer known for his satirical and humorous drawings of working-class Berlin citizens. Born on January 10, 1858 in Radeburg, Germany, in 1887 his family moved to Berlin where he began an apprenticeship as a lithographer. When he lost his job in 1910, the well-known German Impressionist painter Max Liebermann encouraged Zille to make a living from his drawings alone, which he had already been publishing in Simplicissimus, Berlin’s satirical weekly newspaper. His fame peaked towards the end of his life in the 1920s, during the “golden age” of the Weimar Republic: in 1921, the National Gallery of London acquired a selection of his drawings, and in 1924 he was awarded with a professorship by the Academy of the Arts in Berlin. In 1928, Zille’s 70th birthday was celebrated throughout Berlin, and he died the following year on August 9, 1929.
